Dublin is the capital of the Irish Republic and is a city of musicians, poets and dreamers. Its Georgian buildings, whisky distilleries and historic castles are tangible and colourful reminders of bygone times and numerous well preserved buildings, cafes, churches and idyllic canals also add to the captivating atmosphere of this fun loving city.

One of the city's main landmarks is a splendid structure, Halfpenny Bridge, which derived its name due to a toll that was once extracted from those who crossed it.

Dublin Castle is one of the city's oldest buildings. It has seen much transformation and is a combination of several building styles. After the Vikings, the Normans conquered the city and ruled over it for seven hundred years and under King Henry The Eighth Dublin became the capital of what was then a British colony.

Trinity College is Ireland's oldest and most venerable university. It was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth The First. The high standard of education offered here has attracted famous pupils such as Jonathan Swift, Henry Grattan and Samuel Becket.

Kilkenny is one of the most beautiful towns in the Republic Of Ireland and numerous historic buildings highlight the city's colourful past. Since the end of the 12th century, Kilkenny Castle, located close to the Nore River, has been the town's most prominent landmark.

In 1391 the castle was acquired by the Butler's, an aristocratic family that influenced Kilkenny right up until the 20th century.

The city was founded by Saint Canice who in the 6th century had a monastery built close to the River Nore and at the time of the Anglo Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169 four church communities existed here.

Located in Parliament Street, Rothe House dates back to 1594 and is another of the city's popular historic sights. Renovated in 1966, the building complex contains three houses that are grouped around two tranquil inner courtyards.

Kilkenny has retained its unique historic atmosphere right up to the present day and can thus justifiably be referred to as 'The jewel of the Irish Middle Ages'.

On Tour... THE DINGLE PENINSULA Coastline, Dolphin's & Prehi

The Dingle Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland is well known as one of the country's most scenic locations. It is also a region with a fascinating history and the origin of its villages and farms date back to Early Christian and even prehistoric times.

The fifteen hundred inhabitants of tiny Dingle Town have for generations been closely associated with the sea. Although today's fishing industry is not what it once was, the fishing harbour still plays a vital role in the lives of the local people. Due to tourism the pubs of Dingle Town are kept well busy, however, compared with other parts of Ireland tourism here is a far more subdued affair.

In Dingle Town in 1984 a dolphin appeared just off the coast and it accompanied the fishing boats into the harbour and indeed it still does and the Dingle Dolphin is now a well known attraction on this part of the coast.

The Dunbeg Fort originated in the Bronze Age. Archaeology has shown that it dates back to the eighth century B.C. The magnificent location of the fortress hundreds of metres above the thundering sea and mighty cliffs make the visit to Dunbeg Fort a dramatic adventure.

Close to Fahan is a large group of Beehive Huts, ancient circular buildings that date back to the Last Ice Age. According to archaeologists further buildings were erected in early Christian times.

Its mysterious prehistoric and early Christian monuments as well as the beauty of its landscape have given the Dingle Peninsula the magic that has rightly made The Emerald Isle famous throughout the world!
